Life on Guam

Well, we've been on Guam for almost 5 months now.  We lived through a Super Typhoon in December.  That was quite an experience, and not one I wish to repeat soon!  But, now we are almost back to "normal", whatever that is!  I thought I would just put a few pictures up.  Most are underwater shots of Craig and the boys SCUBA diving.  I hope to have more to share very soon.  We always enjoy hearing from our family and friends so, please drop us an e-mail when you get the chance!

Craig was the one to blaze the trail into the land of SCUBA (should I say into Underwater World?!).  It is apparently something he's wanted to do since he was a child.  Ironically, he had never mentioned it to his wife until they got the orders to Guam.

He didn't waste any time "getting wet" and got his Open Water Diver Certification within weeks of our arrival, followed closely by Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, and more recently Nitrox.  He dives at least once a week, often more.  And is absolutely captivated with his new hobby.

Caleb

Caleb was the next one to obtain a certification.  He is now an official 10-11 Junior Open Water Diver.  And, I might add, he is extremely pleased.  This picture was taken on his first boat dive.  Craig, Caleb and I went on a boat dive the very day he finished his certification training.  The guys had been diving all day Saturday and all morning on Sunday to get in the required number of dives so that he would be allowed to do the boat dive.  We thought it was a fun way to celebrate as well.

Caleb is a "natural" and I can tell you that Craig was one proud papa!  They are both greatly enjoying this new hobby and are excited to have a "built-in dive buddy" right at home.  No more having to call around and find someone to go dive, they just decide they want to go, get their air tanks filled and off to the beach.

Jonah

This is a picture of Jonah "borrowing" Caleb's dive gear.  Craig has allowed the four big boys to take it for a test drive and they all seem to enjoy it immensely.  They have taken to the water like...well, like fish!  You will notice that the colors are much more brilliant in this picture.  The reason is that water filters out color so, the deeper you go, the more color you lose.  Jonah was in about 15 feet of water here, whereas Caleb was probably closer to 40 feet and I don't know about Craig, but he may have been even deeper.

All of the kids are getting swimming lessons.  The four big boys started before the typhoon and had only gotten in 3 lessons before it hit.  The base pool has yet to reopen, although there is hope!  We have watched the progress from "pond scum with a zillion frogs" to draining and cleaning to the refilling which was just yesterday (2/19).  We have to allow time for them to get the chemical mix right and to have Public Health certify the safety of the water and then we're back in business!  I imagine I will have to go back to square one with Javan, getting him reaccustomed to the water and then hopefully we can start his and Chloe's lessons in about a month or so.

More later!
